PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
As well as decades of talking with children, young people, parents and others, typically about very personal matters, I have trained and supervised psychiatrists at core and specialist level, mentored newly qualified consultant psychiatrists, appraised consultant doctors, and provided coaching to health service personnel. I have delivered training and consultation in health, education, and social care settings. I have taught and worked as an activities leader with children.
I can provide:
- Mentoring or coaching, whether you are a health professionals or not.
- Facilitation of group process
- Training sessions on specified topics
- Informal, Values-Based support for professional and personal development.
I have first hand experience of the challenges of working in the National Health Service and I am particularly keen to support NHS clinicians currently working in these very demanding times.
CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE
I have long experience in the NHS as a consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Although now retired fully from medical practice I have kept this section of the site as it is an important aspect of my own formation, and it would be hard to understand me without knowledge of it.
My practice incorporated wide therapeutic interests and experience, including systemic, dynamic, behavioural and cognitive approaches. I developed interest and expertise in managing emotional problems in the context of general healthcare, including the management of unexplained physical symptoms.
I am therefore at home working with clinicians from all areas of healthcare and in all stages of career.
I no longer take direct or indirect responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
CHARGING
If you work for the NHS then you are likely to be eligible for free coaching or mentoring through the leadership academy. The first link on the left will take you to the coaching and mentoring page where you can register. There you can read the profiles of mentors and coaches, including me, and pick someone whose approach suits your needs. The lower link is to the front page of the leadership academy for more information.

If you are outside NHS South East, we will negotiate an hourly rate as close as possible to your own hourly rate of pay.
If I am working with more than one person then I propose charging my time at the mid-point between the highest and lowest paid person in the room.
Preparation and write-up time, if needed, are charged at the same rate as discussion time.
I am open to the possibility of reciprocal arrangements or payment in kind.
Travel will be charged (second-class train, bus, or standard mileage as appropriate) unless we are working remotely. I continue to apply caution (distance, face-coverings, ventilation) if working face to face during the current Covid pandemic. For the time being I encourage remote working.
Work will cease if invoices are more than 28 days in arrears.
